song #14

what is the meaning of life?

finding my way

the critical role of work

black night, dark thoughts

one day

pondering

pondering 2

monkey's uncle?

happy by the sea

walking on sand

happy cows die dancing
or so i've always heard
happy pigs die laughing
and birds die rhyming words

the moon is yellow
again tonight
the rain softly falling
how can the moon be shining
i wonder
when the sky is hidden in clouds

even so
some things just are

like spiders waiting
wide awake all winter
just to trap a fly
and rabbits sleeping
all day long
just to play all night

but mostly i wonder
about the smooth round rocks
along the sides of the stream

are they asleep
do you think
or simply resting
and what do you suppose
is on their minds

kicking rocks as i walk along
i take it all for granted
summer days and autumn nights
childhood and fishing poles

how can life not be

forever and ever
how can tomorrow
be any different than today

the best thing of all
is the deep cold spring
seeping up through clay and sand
filling the hidden wallow
with milk-white water
protected from a blazing texas sun

by giant oaks

huddling close together

even while we scream and play
splashing for hours
chasing the cows away
i wonder how the water
can be so cold
when the summer is so hot

but i don't really care
some things just are
